4 month checkup

Today was Sam's 4 month checkup. Baby looks healthy!

Weight: 13lbs (50th percentile)
Length: 24.5" (75th percentile)
Head: 17cm (97th percentile - kid has a big heeeed!)

Doc didn't seem super concerned about her flat spot, although it has gotten worse since before (despite our best efforts). She wants to wait until 6 months to check it again....but eh, isn't that almost too late for a helmet.

Questions for y'all:
1. When did you introduce solids? I feel like waiting until 6 months, to keep feedings more simple till then.
2. When did your babies get their first tooth? How can you tell they are teething? (Sam has been gumming things and drooling forever, so that won't be a good indicator for us)

I go back to work in 2 weeks! The horror! Still trying to find a daycare. Most of the ones we've seen make me want to cry so far.

Now for pics! Here's one of Sam in a cute full body jacket. Another one of Becky and baby sleeping in, together, on the sofa one morning. :)

So cute! What a big healthy girl!

Teething - Noel just got her first two in the last few weeks. (First ~2.5 weeks ago, second about a week ago.) She'd been drooling and gumming on things since almost 3 months old, cranky about her gums since about 4.5 months old. But the week before her tooth came in - oh. my. god. crazy, cranky, up every hour and a half or so at night (when she normally slept through), just utter insanity. Teething is hell.

Food - we started solids at 5.5 months, because she had CRAZY good head and torso control, and was showing interest (read: lunging for our food). We skipped cereals (no nutritive value) and went straight to thicker fruit and veggie purees. Since then, we've done a combo of purees and baby-led weaning. It's great fun, but VERY messy. (both of them. purees may actually be even messier, because she still wants to be in control, which - even if we don't give her the spoon, she grabs for it and wrestles you for it - makes for puree EVERYWHERE.) Great fun, but a PITA. She'll let you know when she's interested, just take it from there.

We were planning to wait to introduce solids until 6 months, since that's the point at which most babies digestive systems can handle it and also when their head/ neck control allows them to sit upright without leaning. That physical milestone also apparently coincides with their ability to control their suck/ swallow reflex. If a baby tries to eat a solid like she drinks breast milk or formula she will gag. They just have to learn how to control that.

All that said, Miles was clearly ready at 5.5 months. Sitting up, reaching for our food, mimicking chewing, etc. we started with rice cereal mixed with breast milk, but went on to homemade fruit and veggie purees very shortly. We also did some baby led weaning, but by 10 months we stopped spoon feeding all together except for yogurt (he clearly did not like being spoon-fed anymore).

Miles got his first 2 teeth just past the 6 month mark. For about a week before that he was a cranky whimpering mess and he wanted to sleep all the time.

Adorable pictures.

Our kids were very different from each other when it came to both teething and eating solids. Our first son had a hard time teething. It was always obvious when he was teething - drooling, crankiness, fevers, diaper rash, sleep interruptions etc. He also got his first two teeth just before he turned 5 months old. Our second gummed and drooled forever and didn't get any teeth until hew as nine months old.. and when they finally came, there was no fuss at all. Same with the next three. So I think it depends on the kid. Once her first teeth come, you'll know how she reacts and you'll probably know the next time she's teething.

As for food, we just started when they seemed ready. For our first that was at four months and our second was six months. We went with signs like an intense interest in watching us eat, chewing while watching us eat, and being able to sit up. Both were off pureed baby food and eating finger foods (whatever we were eating) by a year, but our second was on the baby food longer. We'd try tiny pieces and see if he was ready for finger foods, if he wasn't we'd just wait and try again in a few weeks.

All kids are totally different when teething...chunk was teething for months and just got his first tooth a week ago, 2weeks shy of 8mo!
As far as food, I will email or fb you since you asked me, but in general, we started on cereal with breastmilk at 4.5months and fruits and veggies at 5mos. Chunk was very ready and now eats a solid 3 meals a day with breastmilk feedings in between. He eats a lot! And it is not a messy event for us because he eats every bite!

Brave was adopted at 11 1/2 months so was already on solids when he came home. Mace started eating solids at 9 months, around the same time his first tooth sprang up. We did offer him solids before at around 6 months, but I was terrified of food allergies so decided to wait a little bit longer.

What a cutie !

I swear the drooling goes on FOREVER.
Some people say they looked and one day there was a tooth. It seems like my kids got SUPER cranky and held their mouths.

I started solids with Syd the day they said you could. The first set of twins I waited a little bit. and the second set I waited until just after 6 months because I think it's more about the parents changing things up than it is for the baby.

I will say that some babies seem SUPER interested in food. I think you could introduce them earlier. If your baby doesn't seem to care. Why rush it. :)

Good luck finding a daycare. I know it can be hard.

Sounds like she's growing well!

We introduced solids at 6 months, per the recommendation of the AAP. Plus it's so much easier to wait!

Holland got his first tooth at 11.5 months and we thought he was teeting foreverrrrrrrrrr (I guess he was).

Great pictures, and beautiful little girl.

Food - we waited until just about six months to start cereal, then purees. You'll be able to judge pretty quickly how she does with her tongue thrust reflex.

Teething - Owen started drooling at 3-4 months, but didn't get the first tooth until after 6 months. It's neverending!

Have fun!
